In Brussels, Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister highlights importance of fight against propaganda in countering terrorism
On 17 November in Brussels, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis participated in the EU’s General Affairs Council meeting, which began preparations for the meeting of the European Council to take place on 17-18 December on the basis of an annotated draft agenda. The Council looked at issues which European leaders will address, including the fight against terrorism, following the attacks in Paris on 13 November.
Some member states, including Lithuania, wished to include the issue relating to a European Energy Union into the annotated agenda.
“We must evaluate progress towards creating the Energy Union, especially towards enhancing the EU energy security. In this geopolitical context, synchronising the Baltic and continental European power systems is particularly important in ensuring the EU energy security,” stressed Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister.
Karoblis also highlighted the importance of the role of the fight against propaganda in countering terrorism.
“We have to strengthen the EU strategic communication in order to address the terrorist threat. It is necessary to enhance measures to both combat propaganda of third countries and improve dissemination of European values. This has a particularly important role to play in preventing radicalisation and protecting Europe’s values,” said Karoblis.
