IN BRUSSELS LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER INVITED TO SUPPORT PROGRESSIVE REFORMS IN THE EU EASTERN NEIGHBOURHOOD
On 23 July Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas during the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting in Brussels discussed with EU foreign ministers important issues of the EU Eastern neighbourhood. P. Vaitiekūnas marked the importance of the European Humanities University in provision of all-round education to the Belarusian youth and thanked the European Commission and the Nordic Council for financial support to the University.
Speaking about preparations for the EU-Ukraine Summit that is to take place on 14 September in Ukraine, the Minister took a favourable view of Ukraine’s progress.
“We should send a strong signal to Ukraine and its society saying that Ukraine is a part of Europe, and it can get closer to the EU by taking the path of coherent and resolute reforms”, the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy said.
Debating the relations with Russia, Lithuania together with other EU Member States expressed its solidarity with the United Kingdom’s position and supported its actions in the context of the latter events.
At the meeting the EU trade policy, the Middle East peace process were considered, situation in Iran, Congo, Sudan and negotiations on the status of Kosovo were discussed.
During the GAERC meeting the intergovernmental conference that should prepare the draft reform treaty until the end of the year was opened.
In Brussels at the bilateral meeting with Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga P. Vaitiekūnas discussed the work of the intergovernmental conference, energy policy, exchanged opinions on important issues of international politics.
