IN ATHENS, LITHUANIAN AND HELLENIC FOREIGN MINISTRIES HOLD SECURITY POLICY CONSULTATIONS
On 20 March in Athens, Director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department Gediminas Varvuolis presented to Greek officials highlights of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy of Lithuania’s EU Presidency, scheduled events, and discussed bilateral security dialogue of the two countries as the Presidency of the EU Council draws nearer.
At the meetings with Director of International Organisations Department of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Theohili, Director of Common Foreign and Security Policy Department Constantine Economides and Director of NATO Department Theodoros Daskarolis, officials exchanged views on processes in the European neighbourhood that have effects on the security situation.
Priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council were presented during the political consultations. Officials discussed participation of the two countries in international missions and operations, post-2014 engagement plans for Afghanistan, and exchanged views on preparations for the European Council meeting on security and defence, to be held on December 19 and 20, as well as arms control and non-proliferation issues.
The officials also agreed to actively cooperate and coordinate positions of the two countries on priority issues of European security and defence policy.
