IN AMSTERDAM, LITHUANIAN REPRESENTATIVES TOOK PART IN THE MEETING OF THE TASK FORCE FOR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION ON HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE AND RESEARCH
On 20-23 June in Amsterdam, the delegation headed by Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė participated in the meeting of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Remembrance and Research.
Representatives from 28 countries participated in the activities of the International Task Force (ITF) under the Netherlands Chairmanship. They discussed research about the Holocaust and issues related to memorials and museums, access to the archives, education and communication.When assessing current global reality and peculiarities of historical memory, authoritative members of the international academic community, representatives from non-governmental organizations and Holocaust experts, who take part in the ITF activities, came up with suggestions for the preparation of a future ITF action plan and summarized the experience of various countries.
The head of the Lithuanian delegation informed members of the ITF that the Seimas (Parliament) had passed the Law on Good Will Compensation for the Property of Jewish Religious Communities in Lithuania illegally seized during the occupations by the totalitarian regimes and acquainted them with the programme of the Government to commemorate victims of the Holocaust in Lithuania.
The meeting of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Remembrance and Research in Amsterdam was attended by such members of the Lithuanian delegation: representatives from the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Markas Zingeris and Dean of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas Šarūnas Liekis.
Within the ITF working groups, representatives discussed the proposals that were submitted by the Netherlands Chairmanship regarding the priorities for future activities, the Holocaust research, and actualization of memory in today’s global context and presented Lithuania’s ongoing projects that were being implemented with the support of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Remembrance and Research.
