IN ABUJA, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER DISCUSSES COOPERATION WITH NIGERIA WITHIN INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS

On 17 April in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Neris Germanas met with Viola Onwuliri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria. The meetings focussed on opportunities for cooperation when working in multilateral forums.

Germanas and Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs discussed the cooperation between Lithuania and Nigeria within the Community of Democracies, and further partnership opportunities in this area.

Germanas acquainted the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria with Lithuania’s preparation to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. They discussed bilateral cooperation, activities in international organisations, and agreed to look for new opportunities to further economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, as well as to promote business contacts.

Germanas requested Nigeria to support Lithuania’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2014-2015 term. Elections for the Security Council will be held in October.

Lithuania and Nigeria established diplomatic relations on 17 January 2001.
