IMPORTANT WORLD HERITAGE ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED IN VILNIUS

On 21 June during a press conference Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ambassador Ina Marčiulionytė presented the program of the 30th session of the World Heritage Committee.

The 30th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will take place in Vilnius on 8-16 July. The session will be attended by Director General of UNESCO Koïchiro Matsuura and more than 500 heritage experts, representatives of state institutions and international organizations from all continents of the world.

“This is an annual event – an international conference, there the most important world heritage issues are discussed,” Ambassador Marčiulionytė said.

According to the Ambassador, during the conference the European Periodic Report will be presented, new nominations i.e. properties that are submitted to be included in the World Heritage List – will be considered. More than 200 issues related to the state of properties that already are in the World Heritage List will be addressed.

“The Committee will discuss what the outstanding universal value is - currently this is probably a major concern of the Committee. Also the question that is often posed – whether the List is finite and how many objects can be included in the List. These issues will be addressed during the 30th session of the World Heritage Committee,” Ambassador to the UNESCO noticed.

The event is organized by Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs  in cooperation with the ministries of Environment and Culture.
