IMPORTANT ISSUES OF THE LITHUANIAN STATE BORDER WERE DISCUSSED AT THE MEETING, INITIATED BY THE LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
On 5 March, at the initiative of the head of Lithuanian diplomacy Petras Vaitiekūnas a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during which the situation at the Lithuanian State border was discussed.
Together with the administration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Commander of the State Border Protection Service Valentinas Novikovas also took part at the meeting.
The process of negotiation with neighbour countries regarding the delimitation and demarcation of the Lithuanian State border and the determination of the economic zone in the Baltic Sea were discussed at the meeting. Minister P.Vaitiekūnas dedicated specific attention to the problems of the State border intersections. The Lithuanian border areas are shared with two countries: three intersections on the land border and two intersections at the sea border. The procedure of the demarcation of the border intersection is completed only in the State border area of Liudvinavas, where our country meets with Latvia and Belarus.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas was also interested in the actual State border maintenance. The attention was paid to the fact that not all the Municipalities, the administrated territory of which included the border area, were acting in accordance with the Lithuanian Government decision of 1993, which obliged these administrative units to form the State border commissions. The commissions should adjust all the agreements and projects, concerning the State border regime, territory planning, planning, and building of infrastructure and other objects, and their exploitation with the Commission on the Delimitation and Demarcation of the Lithuanian State Border and the Determination of the Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea of the Lithuanian Republic.
Discussing the issues of crossing the State border after Lithuania’s joining the Schengen area, it was stated that lifting the internal border control within member states had a positive impact capacitating travelling to other countries within the Schengen area. Many citizens wonder why their documents are still sometimes checked, while crossing the border. The participants of the meeting highlighted that countries of the Schengen area, including Lithuania, had a right of choice to check the documents of citizens who were entering or leaving its territory. Therefore, travellers should carry their identification documents. This measure is necessary, seeking to prevent the illegal migration and other law-breaking.
