On May 3-4, Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi paid an official visit to Lithuania. The Hungarian Foreign Minister has met with Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, Prime Minister Rolandas Paksas and Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis.
The two countries' foreign ministers have signed bilateral agreement on cooperation and mutual aid in the event of catastrophes and large-scale emergency and exchanged diplomatic notes on amending a treaty for visa-free travel between the two countries. The amendment confirms a 90-day period of visa-free travel to Lithuania and Hungary for citizens of the countries.
During the press conference in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Minister Valionis noted that Lithuanian - Hungarian relations and their possible expansion, regional problems, Lithuanian and Hungarian negotiations on EU membership, NATO enlargement and Lithuania's perspectives to become its member were discussed between Lithuanian and Hungarian delegations. It was stressed that Lithuanian - Hungarian relations are good, the intensive cooperation is going on and the judicial basis for it is well developed.
Minister Martonyi highly evaluated Lithuanian - Hungarian relations and said that there were a lot of opportunities for their expansion. The Hungarian Foreign Minister stressed that Hungary supports NATO enlargement and the membership of the Baltic States in the Alliance.
