On 4 May, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Darius Stanulis met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer. The main focus of the meeting was Russia‘s aggression against Ukraine and ICRC‘s activities in this context.
"The international community should unite its efforts to help and support the victims of Russia‘s war. Thanks to its neutrality and impartiality, ICRC‘s role in ensuring compliance with the international humanitarian law is crucial“, said Staniulis.
The Ambassador thanked ICRC for its efforts to implement humanitarian corridors and ensure humanitarian access, and encouraged to continue this important work. Staniulis also emphasized that the consequences of the war would be global, long-lasting, and would affect all future conflicts. ICRC is an independent and neutral humanitarian organization established in 1863 and based in Geneva. Its mandate stems from the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and relates to ensuring compliance with the international humanitarian law and providing protection and assistance for victims of armed conflicts.
ICRC is an important part of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement that consists of ICRC, the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
