HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE OF LITHUANIAN RESIDENTS IS SENT TO GEORGIA
Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which coordinates the provision of humanitarian assistance to Georgia, thanks all the residents of Lithuania, companies and public organizations for their contribution to the endeavours of charity collection of clothes and food for the sufferers in Georgia. Mostly clothes for women, men and children, and bedding were collected. A part of the charity of the residents is comprised of toys for children, baby food, footwear, and haberdashery.
A part of the collected humanitarian assistance, consisting of bedding, sleeping bags, sanitary gods, alimentary products for children and babies, clothes and other goods will be sent to Georgia on a military air plane from Zokniai military airport on 21 August. The rest of the charity will reach Georgia in the nearest time.
Currently there is a particularly big want of food for children in Georgia. It is collected at the Volunteer Centre (S.Moniuškos Street 27, the building of Žvėrynas Neighbourhood Administration, 2nd floor, 9:00 h. through 21:00 h.) until 26 August.
Foreign Ministry is informing that Democracy and Development Assistance Fund has stopped the collection of the charity of clothes and other goods from the residents of Lithuania. We will announce separately, if this endeavour is resumed.
Humanitarian assistance was collected by Democracy and Development Assistance Fund, the Volunteer Centre, the Order of Cistercians in Kaunas, the Sisters of the Holy Family in Marijampolė and Šiauliai Culture Centre. The Fire and Rescue Department and the Lithuanian Armed Forces are assisting the transportation of humanitarian assistance to Georgia.
Companies Maxima LT, Biok, Merkys, Releksa, Skinija and Tonalė were the biggest benefactors of charity. Those and other companies have donated sanitary goods, plaids, sleeping bags, clothes, sportswear and children’s pantyhose, and other goods to charity.
United Nations humanitarian organizations in Georgia, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent and the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to Georgia indicate that presently the most wanted humanitarian assistance to the people of Georgia is financial.
Residents and companies are encouraged to continue donating finances for the victims of military actions in Georgia. Democracy and Development Assistance Fund will collect finances for the citizens of George, who have suffered from war, until 1 September. The Lithuanian Red Cross Society will collect donations until 14 September.
According to the information of Georgian institutions, there is yet no need of foreign volunteer specialists’ assistance. In time of need, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will inform non-governmental organizations and the society.
We are requesting those non-governmental organizations, which intend to organize endeavours of collecting charity to the Georgian people, to inform the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which coordinates the provision and transportation of humanitarian assistance to Georgia.
