HIGH-LEVEL CONSULTATIONS AT THE ORGANIZATION FOR SECURITY AND CO-OPERATION IN EUROPE

On 12-13 September Lithuanian delegation led by the Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Dalius Čekuolis took part in high-level consultations of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna.

The consultations aimed at discussing the OSCE goals and reforms framework, outlining the ways to strengthen organization’s efficiency in the fields of security provision, conflict settlement and human dimension.

During the consultations D. Čekuolis underlined the fact that the OSCE could make the best use of its opportunities in the field of human security: it should pay more attention to strengthening of democracy, media freedom, human rights and the rule of law. He also emphasised the important role of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in election observation.

The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary expressed Lithuania’s position concerning the more effective realization of the OSCE’s potential in settling conflicts and encouraging Council of the Baltic Sea States cooperation with similar subregional organizations of South Eastern Europe, Black Sea region, Caucasus and Central Asia.

The high-level consultations continue the discussion on the OSCE reform and provide the states with opportunity to express their positions and to work towards the agreement on the role of the biggest regional organization in XXI century.

During the consultations the Ministry Undersecretary Dalius Čekuolis met with representatives of the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Norway, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
