HEADS OF LITHUANIAN AND TURKMEN DIPLOMACY DISCUSSED THE PERSPECTIVES OF ECONOMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN THE COUNTRIES
On 18 September in Paris, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov discussed bilateral relations, perspectives of economic cooperation and important issues of international policy. The bilateral meeting took place, when both ministers were participating at the EU-Central Asia Ministerial Forum on security issues. Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas presented perspectives of cooperation in the area of transport - possibilities of the container train Viking and a project of constructing a deepwater seaport in Klaipėda.
Minister R.Meredov indicated that Lithuania and Turkmenistan could cooperate in the area of oil refining and in the construction sector.
Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned that Lithuania started a development cooperation project in the field of healthcare in Turkmenistan. Head of Turkmen diplomacy welcomed the Lithuanian project and stressed that presently a lot of attention was devoted to public health care system in Turkmenistan.
Ministers also discussed important issues of international policy, including events in Georgia. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the events in Georgia demonstrated that tools to guarantee the security of the international energy infrastructure were necessary.
Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs invited his Turkmen counterpart to visit Vilnius.
