HEAD OF LITHUANIA’S DIPLOMACY: FOREIGN MINISTRY SEEKS TO BE A RELIABLE PARTNER FOR LITHUANIA’S BUSINESS

On 21 January, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with heads of associated business organisations: President of the International Chamber of Commerce ICC Lithuania Julius Niedvaras, President of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists Bronislovas Lubys, President of the Association of Lithuanian Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Crafts Rimantas Stankevičius, also with Director General of the Lithuanian Business Employers’ Confederation Danas Arlauskas and others. They discussed directions of the Lithuanian economic diplomacy and perspectives of its development.

The purpose of this meeting was to join efforts in defining the priority tasks of economic diplomacy and to create constructive and regular relations between the executive power and business community.

“The new government has set a task to exercise former economic diplomacy, promoting foreign investments and export. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeks to be a reliable partner for the Lithuanian business in developing economic relations, therefore, your opinion on optimisation of the economic representation does matter to us,” said V.Ušackas.

Head of the Lithuanian diplomacy presented the Ministry’s draft strategic action plan for 2009–2011 to the representatives from the associated business organisations and asked for their assessment. During the meeting, a lot of attention was dedicated to the search of the new markets, energy issues and intended business missions.

The Minister also informed that a position of an Undersecretary for economic diplomacy will be established at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Foreign Affairs V.Ušackas indicated that the diplomatic service is prepared in every way to defend and to represent lawful interests of the Lithuanian business abroad, to seek for favourable conditions of foreign trade and investments for the Lithuanian business.
