GERMANY SUPPORTS LITHUANIAN MEMBERSHIP IN EU AND NATO

On 17 April, Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Evaldas Ignatavičius ended his visit in Germany by meeting German Foreign Ministry’s State Secretary Günter Pleuger. During his two-day stay in Berlin, Evaldas Ignatavičius participated in the political consultations with the representatives of the Government Office, Foreign Ministry and Bundestag. During the consultations, German representatives ensured their support for Lithuania’s membership in the European Union (EU) and NATO and expressed their hope for partnership relations in both organisations in the near future. German officials positively evaluated Lithuania’s preparation for EU membership and noted the importance of Lithuania’s participation in the Convention on EU future. The meetings asserted the successful development of bilateral political, economic, cultural co-operation and an active dialogue carried out at the highest level. The importance of successful Lithuania’s presentation at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October was underscored. German officials were positive about Lithuania’s Chairmanship at the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, substantial contribution to regional co-operation, balanced relations with Russia, Ukraine and efforts to maintain contacts with Belarus.
