GEORGIA’S EUROPEAN AND EURO-ATLANTIC INTEGRATION IS DISCUSSED IN VILNIUS

On 22 November, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis met with the Georgian State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Aleksi Petriashvili, who is paying a visit to Vilnius. Their conversation focused on the EU-NATO relations and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations.

The Georgian State Minister came to Vilnius to participate in the conference “10 Years Since The 2002 Prague Summit”, which is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the invitation to join NATO. Conference is co-organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Lithuanian Atlantic Treaty Association.

Ažubalis acquainted the guest with Lithuania’s preparations to hold the Presidency of the EU Council. The Eastern Partnership initiative is among the main priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2013. The third Eastern Partnership Summit will be held in Vilnius in November 2013.

Lithuanian Minister voiced support to the commitment of Georgia’s new Government, which was formed after the parliamentary elections of 1 October, to actively pursue further European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The Minister assured his guest that Lithuania was ready to continue supporting Georgia on its path and help them to carry through the necessary reforms.

Ažubalis welcomed Georgia’s progress towards NATO membership and thanked for the country’s contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan.

From 2011 to 2012 Lithuanian Embassy in Georgia serves as a NATO Contact Point Embassy and thus promotes NATO-Georgia relations.
