GEORGIA SUPPORTS LITHUANIA’S ASPIRATION TO CHAIR THE ORGANIZATION FOR SECURITY AND COOPERATION IN EUROPE IN 2010
On 2 February in Tbilisi Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas had a bilateral meeting with Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gela Bezhuashvili and discussed the issues of bilateral relations and planned multilateral events in Lithuania and in Georgia.
The ministers discussed topical issues of the EU-Georgia relations, preparations for implementation of the European Neighbourhood Policy Action Plan, possibilities of economic rapprochement with the EU markets. Forthcoming expert meetings on these issues were agreed.
Basing on the experience of the Free Trade Agreement between the Baltic States Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas proposed to use regional free trade organizations to support integration of Georgia’s market into the common European Union’s market.
Lithuanian and Georgian foreign ministers also talked about visa regime and other issues related to Lithuania’s accession to the Schengen area. The ministers noted that effective actions should be taken to settle separatist conflicts in Georgia. The European Union’s contribution to these processes is also important.
“Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should remain undivided,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy emphasised.
Minister Vaitiekūnas informed his Georgian counterpart about Lithuania’s aspiration to chair the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in 2010. Georgia expressed its support to Lithuania.
