Gabrielius Landsbergis in the Philippines: “China’s provocative behaviour in the South China Sea defies international law”
On April 25, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with the Secretary of National Defense of the Philippines, Angelit M. De Leon.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked the Philippines for its consistent support of Ukraine and called for continued pressure on Russia to comply with the fundamental norms of international law.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister also expressed solidarity over China’s provocative and dangerous behaviour in the South China Sea.
“The aggressive actions by Chinese forces against Philippine vessels violates an international court ruling and threatens the region as a whole. Territorial integrity and sovereignty are universal principles that are important both in Europe and off the Philippine coast,” Landsbergis said.
Opportunities for cooperation in the field of security, possible joint exercises, concentration of forces in the field of cyber security, and development of defence technologies were also discussed.
“Lithuania’s long-standing experience in countering hybrid threats can be useful for the Philippines to address challenges in its region,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.
This is the Lithuanian Foreign Minister’s first visit to the Philippines. Landsbergis will also meet with the Philippine Foreign Affairs, Energy, Information, and Communications Technology Secretaries.
