Gabrielius Landsbergis at the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting on Afghanistan: transatlantic ties are the foundation of our strength

On 20 August, Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis took part in the Extraordinary Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers. The virtual meeting was held to discuss the difficult security situation in Afghanistan.

Referring to the conclusion of the 20-year-long NATO’s Resolute Support Mission, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister noted that maintaining the unity and solidarity of the Alliance was particularly important in the current situation.

“Transatlantic ties are the foundation of our strength. We must reflect attentively on both lessons learnt and achievements, and be united in ensuring that the present situation should not turn into another migration crisis,” Minister Landsbergis said.

The Allies reaffirmed their commitment to continue safe evacuation of NATO country citizens and at-risk Afghans. Evacuation operations will continue through Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

The NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs called for an immediate end to violence in Afghanistan, expressed concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in the country, called for all political forces in Afghanistan to meet international commitments and safeguard the human rights of all Afghans, particularly women, children, and minorities.
