From Iceland to Australia: the views of Lithuanians living abroad matter to Lithuania

With less than a month to go before the possibility to complete Lithuania’s diaspora survey ends, more than 1,500 respondents from 65 countries have already taken part. To ensure the broadest possible representation of the diaspora, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites people in Lithuania to share the survey link with relatives and friends living abroad and encourage them to take part.

“A diversity of views helps us understand the challenges our diaspora faces today and the solutions that will be needed in the future, from making it easier to participate in life in Lithuania to encouraging return migration. Every Lithuanian living abroad has a valuable perspective, and we encourage everyone to take an active part in the survey,” said Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristupas Vaitiekūnas.

So far, the largest numbers of respondents have come from the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain and Sweden, countries with some of the largest Lithuanian diaspora communities. Other communities have also shown strong engagement, with significant numbers of responses received from Brazil, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada, Argentina and Australia.

The survey’s reach extends well beyond the traditional destinations of Lithuanian emigration, with responses also received from places as far afield as American Samoa, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Brunei, the British Virgin Islands and Panama.

Lithuanians living abroad are encouraged to take part in the survey and share their experiences and insights. Those with relatives and friends living abroad are invited to send them the survey link. Every response helps provide a more accurate picture of the diaspora’s experiences and needs.

The survey results will serve as one of the sources of information used to further develop Lithuania’s diaspora policy, strengthen measures aimed at encouraging return to Lithuania, and improve the effectiveness of other initiatives for the diaspora.

The survey is open to Lithuanian citizens and people of Lithuanian descent aged 18 or over who have been living abroad for more than six months. It is anonymous and can be completed in Lithuanian, English or Spanish. Only fully completed questionnaires will be included in the data analysis. The survey will remain open until 8 November 2026.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted the Lithuanian diaspora survey periodically since 2012. It was most recently carried out in 2024 and typically attracts around 2,000 respondents from almost 70 countries.
