FREE ELECTIONS IN GEORGIA AND A DIALOGUE WITH OPPOSITION IS A EUROPEAN WAY TO RESOLVE THE CRISIS
In Tbilisi, on 9 November Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas discussed the situation in Georgia at the meeting with EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas and EU Special Representative P.Semneby agreed that it was especially important to have the state of emergency withdrawn in Georgia as soon as possible and to hold democratic elections, in which the opposition would be allowed to take part freely and the freedom of press would not be curbed.
“The plan to hold presidential elections in Georgia on 5 January the next year is a very important decision. Free elections and a dialogue with opposition is a European way to resolve the crisis”, said Minister P.Vaitiekūnas.
Today in the evening the meetings of Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas with President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli are also scheduled in Tbilisi.
