On December 5, former US Undersecretary of State Strobe Talbott accompanied by his wife Mrs. Brooke Shearer came on a three days visit to Lithuania. Currently Strobe Talbott is Director of the Globalization Studies Center of Yale University; his wife is Director of the "World Fellows" program at the same University.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis who was departing to Moldova and the Ukraine in the capacity of the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe met the former Undersecretary of State at Vilnius airport.
During the meeting the officials discussed Lithuania's Chairmanship of the Council of Europe, international situation after the September 11th terrorist attacks in the US, altering Russia's position on international security issues and the NATO enlargement perspectives.
Minister Valionis was optimistic about Lithuania's invitation to the NATO during the Prague Summit in 2002. He stressed that Lithuania is actively preparing for the membership. The former State Department official considers that Lithuania and other Baltic States have real chances to be invited to the Alliance.
