FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER MEETS WITH A CANDIDATE TO THE POST OF IAEA DIRECTOR GENERAL

On 13 February, Lithuania‘s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Šarūnas Adomavičius received  Ambassador Abdul Samad Minty, Special Representative on Disarmament in South Africa’s Department of Foreign Affairs. At the meeting, important issues of international disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) where discussed.

Forthcoming election of IAEA Director General was also on the agenda of the meeting. Ambassador A.S.Minty is one of the nominees for the post, after the current IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei ends his tenure. M.ElBaradei has been managing the Agency since 1997.

In autumn 2008, Lithuania was elected to the Board of Governors of the IAEA for a period of two years.
