FOREIGN UNDERSECRETARY IS TAKING PART IN THE CONFERENCE ON THE EU’S EASTERN PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE
On 6 May in Prague, Undersecretary of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius is taking part in the international conference “Eastern Partnership: Towards Civil Society Forum”.
The new roles of civil society and human rights organisations as well as possibilities that open up after launching the Eastern Partnership initiative are being discussed at the conference. It is intended that officially the Eastern Partnership initiative would be launched during the meeting of heads of the European Union and its neighbours in the East on 7 May.
At the conference in Prague, Undersecretary of the Ministry E.Ignatavičius stressed that the implementation of joint projects with the EU neighbours in the East was of major importance in the Eastern Partnership initiative. According to E.Ignatavičiaus, the integration of the Visegrad countries and the Baltic States into Euro-Atlantic structures could be an example for others to follow.
“It is of major importance to create the transport and energy infrastructure, which would allow for economic development possibilities in the countries of the region. The cooperation should be complemented by direct people-to-people contacts, youth and culture exchange. Therefore, we should facilitate the visa regime and promote cross-border cooperation,” said E.Ignatavičius.
Representatives of the civil society organisations from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and member states of the European Union are taking part in the event. Lithuania is represented by nongovernmental organisations, which are implementing Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion projects in the Eastern European countries.
