Lithuania approves, in principle, the constitutional and political balance defined in the draft EU Constitutional Treaty and takes the view that additional discussions at the inter-governmental conference will be needed only on several issues.
Lithuanian Foreign Undersecretary Rytis Martikonis stated this at the meeting of EU member states and candidate countries held on 1 September in Prague. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the countries’ positions and adjust their common priorities in the face of the upcoming EU inter-governmental conference.
Nevertheless, according to the diplomat, it will be necessary to evaluate “how the reached compromise will look in practice”.
According to the Foreign Undersecretary, the revision of the draft project should be based on three principles: “to clarify, to concretize and, if necessary, to correct”.
The principles followed by Lithuania at the conference will be the same as those at the European Convention, where the draft EU Constitutional Treaty was developed, i.e. of all nations’ equality, institutional balance and democratic legitimacy.
The diplomat stated that Lithuania would seek to adjust positions with other like-minded countries at the conference and other multilateral forums.
