FOREIGN MINISTRY’S STATEMENT ON THE DECISION BY THE SWISS GOVERNMENT TO IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS FOR CERTAIN CATEGORIES OF RESIDENCE PERMITS
Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is concerned about the decision by the Swiss Government of 1 May to re-establish quantitative limitations for certain categories of residence permits for EU citizens who are nationals of eight EU member states.
This decision is in breach of the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons between the EU and Switzerland, discriminates against the citizens of the eight EU member states and allows for differentiation between EU citizens.Lithuania and Switzerland enjoy close political and economic cooperation. Therefore, Lithuanian Foreign Ministry believes that the Swiss Government will reconsider its decision as soon as possible.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also completely agrees with the statement by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on the matter.
