At the 5th meeting of the states parties of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (the Ottawa Convention) on 17 September in Bangkok, Director of Security Policy Department of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rytis Paulauskas underscored the importance of universalising the Convention and its input into increasing mutual trust among the states.
Rytis Paulauskas also congratulated Belarus, which joined the Treaty on the eve of the meeting, and reminded about the participation of the Lithuanian fleet in the international mine-clearance operations and exercise. Lithuania will become a full-fledged member of the Convention on 1 November 2003.
Next year Lithuania intends to hold a seminar on the issue of anti-personnel mines. This informal suggestion of Lithuania was received with much attention from the side of the European Union member states as well as international and non-governmental organisations
