FOREIGN MINISTRY URGES TO STOP BRUTAL PERSECUTION OF BELARUSIAN OPPOSITION
Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the actions of Belarusian authorities against the leaders of democratic forces of this country.
One of the Belarusian opposition leaders, the Chairman of the National Committee and the United Civil Party Anatoly Lebedko had been detained for more than nine hours using threats and violence.
The Chairman of Belarusian People’s Front Vincuk Vechiorka, former Presidential candidate of the united opposition Aleksandr Milinkevich together with the head of his election headquarters Sergej Kaliakin and one of the leaders of independent trade unions Aleksandr Buchvostov were detained and sentenced to 15 days arrest.
The restriction of the citizens’ freedom for organization of the action of protest “Chernobyl’s way” in Minsk, though the authorities had given the permission for this action, is an obvious violation of human and citizen rights.
The prohibition to issue visas to the Members of Lithuanian Parliament, who planned to go to commemorate the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy, is unacceptable and absolutely unjustified decision.
These actions of Belarusian authorities fail to meet any standards of civilised state.
We hope the official Minsk to decide on immediate release of the arrested political prisoners among them the former Presidential candidate Aleksandr Kozulin and stop brutal actions of Belarusian power structures against the representatives of democratic forces.
