FOREIGN MINISTRY UNDERSECRETARY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ASEAN-EU FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING IN INDONESIA

On 9-10 March, Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Šarūnas Adomavičius will take part in the European Union and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers Meeting in Jakarta. During the meeting in the capital of Indonesia the ministers will consider how to strengthen EU-ASEAN relations especially in the field of fight against terrorism and international crime. It is hoped that the ministers will approve the European Commission’s Communication on a new partnership with South East Asia, where the Commission proposes to activate relations with strategically important South East Asia region especially aiming to support regional stability and the fight against terrorism, promote human rights, democratic principles and good governance. In the document it is also advised to intensify trade relations and investment, continue to support the development of less prosperous countries. This is the first time Lithuania takes part in the EU-ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting. Lithuania engaged in this dialogue automatically after its accession to the EU on 1 May, 2004.
