FOREIGN MINISTRY UNDERSECRETARY PRESENTED IN ATHENS FURTHER LITHUANIA’S ACTIVITIES IN PREPARATION FOR EU MEMBERSHIP

During the meeting in Athens with Anastasios Giannitsis, Foreign Vice Minister of the Hellenic Republic, which is currently holding EU presidency, Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Rytis Martikonis presented Lithuania’s priorities and interests of the country’s “European agenda”. “Having concluded the accession negotiations we are getting involved in the agenda of the EU. Formulating Lithuania’s “European agenda” we are laying the basis for efficient and beneficial participation of the country in the EU”, Rytis Martikonis pointed out after the meeting with the Greek officials. The talks addressed EU tasks for the first half of this year, directions of Lithuania’s further preparation for the membership, issues of accession treaty ratification, preparation for the referendum on the EU membership, work of European Convention and coordination of EU affairs in Greece. The issue of coordinating EU position on Iraq was also discussed. According to Rytis Martikonis, Lithuania’s priority today is to be an active and constructive member of the EU.
