FOREIGN MINISTRY STATEMENT: THE NUCLEAR TEST CONDUCTED BY THE DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF KOREA POSES THREAT TO PEACE

Lithuania received with great concern the information of 9 October on nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

We condemn this action of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the action that causes tension and poses serious threat to the peace and security not only in the region but in the whole world. This is a grave breach of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. North Korea is urged to announce immediately refraining from tests of any other nuclear devices, publicly renounce nuclear weapons and return immediately to the six-party talks without precondition.

Lithuania’s position is also reflected in the statements made by the Presidency of the European Union and the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana and NATO statement.

Lithuania strongly supports the international community’s call on the North Korea to return to the negotiations without delay and cease completely the development of any nuclear weapon and related programs.
