FOREIGN MINISTRY DELEGATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BALTIC COUNCIL AND THE BALTIC ASSEMBLY SESSIONS

On 18 December, delegation from Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by the Ministry Undersecretary Dalius Čekuolis, attended 10th Session of the Baltic Council and 23rd Session of the Baltic Assembly in Riga. In his report to the Baltic Council on cooperation of the Baltic States D. Čekuolis noticed that energy, infrastructure, defence and environment protection issues remain Lithuania’s priorities in Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian cooperation. The diplomat underlined the importance of the electricity bridge to Poland project for the whole region, the necessity to continue paying special attention to the transport projects “Via Baltica” and “Rail Baltica”, briefly presented problems of oil extraction in the Baltic Sea on the oil platform near the Curonian spit D-6. D. Čekuolis introduced the main priorities of Lithuania’s accession to the Shengen Treaty – border protection, fight with illegal migration and joining the Shengen information system. During the Baltic Assembly Session Director of the Europe department of Lithuanian MFA Eitvydas Bajarūnas delivered report on the Baltic States cooperation in helping the third countries and sharing the reform experience with them. Established in 1991, the Baltic Assembly is the organization for cooperation between parliaments of the Baltic States. In 1994 during the meeting of the Prime Ministers of three countries in Tallinn the Baltic Council of Ministers was established. Joint sessions of the Baltic Assembly and the Council of Ministers are entitled the Baltic Council.
