Foreign Ministers of Sweden and Lithuania discussed regional security, situation in Ukraine and energy issues
On 23 January, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with Foreign Minister of Sweden Margot Wallström in Vilnius. During the meeting the Lithuanian-Swedish partnership was commended as active and many-fold bilateral and regional cooperation. The situation in Ukraine and security energy issues were also discussed.
The Ministers underlined that Eastern Partnership would further remain among the priorities. “Together we have to continue supporting Ukraine and maintain a coherent position with respect to Russia. Only being united shall we be able to defend common interests and values. Our support is necessary to the Eastern Partnership countries to implement their reforms”, Minister Linkevičius said.
The Minister of Lithuania stressed the importance of economic cooperation with Sweden that is a leader among foreign investors in Lithuania.
“The jointly implemented NordBalt power link project is an excellent example of cooperation in the energy area. We hope that by the beginning of 2016 we shall have a common electricity market“, stated Minister Linas Linkevičius.
The Ministers also discussed the importance of strategic communication and the necessity to firmly resist Russia’s propaganda. “We see a great potential of working together in the sphere of information security”, underlined Linkevičius.
During her visit to Vilnius the Swedish Foreign Minister will also meet with the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.
Ms. Margot Wallström was appointed Foreign Minister following the elections in the autumn of 2014. This is her first visit to Lithuania.
