Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Spain in Madrid discuss economic cooperation, energy security issues

On 7 April in Madrid, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation José Manuel García-Margallo, discussed prospects for bilateral economic cooperation, Lithuania’s preparations for the introduction of the euro and European energy security concerns.

L.Linkevičius noted that the creation of the internal energy market in the European Union and the abolition of the so-called “energy islands” remained particularly important for Lithuania as well as for Spain. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister also thanked Spain for supporting these Lithuanian EU Presidency’s priorities.

The Lithuanian Foreign Minister hailed the growing bilateral trade and invited Spanish enterprises to invest more actively in the most progressive sectors of Lithuania’s economy – science and research, innovation and technology.

J.M.García-Margallo voiced support for Lithuania’s intentions to adopt the euro on 1 January 2015 and welcomed the economy’s slow, but steady growth in Spain.

The Foreign Ministers agreed to consult closely on issues related to cooperation within the United Nations.
