FOREIGN MINISTERS OF LITHUANIA AND SLOVAKIA DISCUSSED IMPORTANT BILATERAL RELATIONS

On 26 August, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas received Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia Miroslav Lajčák, who is on a visit to Lithuania. The Ministers discussed bilateral economic cooperation, actions of countries and the European Union while promoting growth of the economy, positive impact of euro introduction on the economy and exchanged opinions on the situation in the Western Balkans.

Infrastructure and energy projects, preparation for the upcoming UN climate conference in December 2009 and cooperation in international organisations were also discussed.

Head of the Lithuanian diplomacy encouraged the Minister of Slovakia to develop bilateral economic and trade cooperation, promote mutual investments.

The Ministers exchanged opinions on relations with the closest EU neighbours and Russia. According to V.Ušackas, the EU has to prepare a consistent common strategy with regard to Russia and invited Slovakia to support Lithuania’s attitude.

V.Ušackas presented to Minister of Slovakia M.Lajčák perspectives of constructing the new Lithuanian Nuclear Power Plant. The Ministers exchanged opinions on the issues of ensuring energy security. Slovakia, just like Lithuania, had undertaken an obligation under the Treaty of Accession to the European Union close down the Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant. Slovakia closed down its Nuclear Power Plant in 2008.
