FOREIGN MINISTERS OF LITHUANIA AND ICELAND DISCUSSED ICELAND’S EU MEMBERSHIP PERSPECTIVES
On 4 June in Elsinore (Denmark), Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Ossur Skarphedinsson.
Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs informed that on 25 May the Government of Iceland submitted to Parliament a project of resolution on opening EU accession negotiations.
It is planned that the Parliament of Iceland will vote regarding this suggestion in the nearest future.
Minister V.Ušackas emphasized that Lithuania would be the first state to support Iceland’s EU membership.
“Just as Iceland was the first to recognise Lithuania’s independence, so now Lithuania will be the first to support Iceland’s EU membership unconditionally,” said V.Ušackas.
V.Ušackas stressed that when the people of Iceland would make up their minds and Iceland would open talks with the EU, Lithuania would be ready to share its experience of EU accession negotiations.
