FOREIGN MINISTER WELCOMES RESULTS OF MALTESE REFERENDUM ON EU MEMBERSHIP

Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Valionis welcomed the results of the referendum of March 8 in Malta, which proved that the Maltese citizens support their country’s membership in the European Union. "The referendum on this country’s membership in the European Union is the first one among the candidate countries, therefore its success is especially important not only for Malta, but also for the other candidate countries. It is this referendum that having successfully started a series of other referendums in the candidate countries gave the required impetus to this process and set out the guidelines to follow for the rest," the foreign minister stated. According to the minister, the success of the referendum in Malta is the first step in practical implementation of the EU enlargement, which leads to a united Europe.
