FOREIGN MINISTER TAKES PART IN THE UN WORLD SUMMIT
On 13 September Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis went to the U.S. to participate as a member of delegation led by the President Valdas Adamkus in the United Nations’ World Summit on Millennium Development Goals and in the 60th Plenary Session of the UN General Assembly.
It is planned that the European Union’s foreign ministers (Lithuanian Foreign Minister among them) will have a political dialogue with the U.S. delegation led by the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Russian delegation headed by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergej Lavrov. During these meetings the issues of the Near East, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, EU-Russia relations and the UN reform will be discussed.
During the visit A. Valionis’ bilateral meetings with Armenian, Georgian, Egyptian, Macedonian, Antigua and Barbuda’s ministers of foreign affairs are scheduled. In the meeting with the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky Lithuanian delegation will have an opportunity to consider the issues of regional policy, perspectives of democracy spread in eastern neighbour countries.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister is to sign the Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.
The 60th Session of the UN General Assembly will start on 14-16 September with the World Summit where the participants should take the decisions on the UN reforms, the actions the states and the UN should take to achieve the Millennium Development Goals including cutting extreme poverty in half by 2015.
Foreign Minister A. Valionis is to come back to Lithuania on 21 September.
