FOREIGN MINISTER OF GERMANY HAS BEEN INVITED TO VISIT LITHUANIA
On 22-23 February in Berlin, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius and representatives from the German Bundestag, Government, Federal Foreign Office, Federal Ministry of the Interior of Germany discussed the issues of foreign policy, economy, Euro-Atlantic relations and culture that are the most important for both countries.
During the meetings, Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius expressed Lithuania’s goal to develop a strategic dialogue with Germany, discussed NATO’s Strategic Concept, the Baltic air-policing mission and thanked Germany for its active participation in the air-policing mission in the Baltic States.
During the meeting with representatives from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius conveyed an invitation of Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis to his German counterpart to visit Lithuania. The Lithuanian-German cooperation in the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, and bilateral scientific and cultural relations were discussed. A lot of attention was dedicated to the EU’s institutional reform after the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force, to the creation of the future EU diplomatic service, the EU’s foreign policy, relations with Russia and Lithuania’s preparations to chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011.
The Vice-Minister expressed satisfaction about the fact that German students at the University of Greifswald had a possibility to study Baltistics and that a German Gymnasium would be established in Vilnius. According to the Vice-Minister, this is particularly important for the promotion of relations between Lithuania and Germany.
On 22 February, the Vice-Minister and experts from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs science and studies foundation discussed the EU’s relations with the Eastern Partnership countries: Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Georgia.
On 23 February, Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius delivered a speech “Security and Cooperation Challenges in the Region: Lithuania’s Approach” at the European Academy in Berlin.
