Foreign Minister Linkevičius calls on Nordic Council of Ministers to continue supporting EHU

On 12 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius had a telephone conversation with the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Dagfinn Høybråten and stressed the importance for this organization to resume financing of the European Humanities University (EHU) in the future.

“Your support and long-time experience as an EHU donor coordinator has been vital to the University. Although the Nordic Council of Ministers has not given any financial support to the University this year, we hope that your input will not be in vain and, in the future, the Council will continue to contribute to the project that is important to the entire region,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.

“Over a decade of EHU’s existence in Vilnius, nearly 1,500 Belarusian students received higher education based on European values in Lithuania. This is our consistent and, so far, the best investment into building mutual understanding between Europe and Belarus, as well as strengthening their relationship,” said Linkevičius.

On 11 May, the Nordic Council of Ministers decided not to grant any financial support to EHU this year. Despite the Council’s withdrawal, other international donors will continue to support EHU, while the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency will take over the role of a donor coordinator.

The high level international conference “10 Years of EHU in Vilnius – Shaping the European Future Together” was held on 10 March in Vilnius. During the conference, representatives of the European Commission, the Northern European countries and governments of other EU member states, also private funds of the United States of America and European countries approved financial support for the University, highlighting the importance of this exceptional transatlantic project to support democracy in the context of today’s geopolitical events in Eastern Europe.
