Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius and his French counterpart discussed key issues for the region

On 29 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Foreign Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian in Vilnius. The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral relations, the situation in Belarus and Ukraine, the relationship with Russia, security situation in the region and the South Caucasus, relevant items on the European Union and international agenda.

“We are grateful to France for its significant contribution to strengthening security of Lithuania and the whole region,” said Linkevičius.
 
When speaking about defence and security cooperation, Lithuania's Foreign Minister stressed the importance of transatlantic relations.
 
The meeting discussed the situation in Belarus and the conflict inNagorno-Karabakh.

“We support the legitimate aspirations of the people of Belarus for change and a free and fair election. The EU must immediately agree on stepping up targeted sanctions on those responsible for the violence against peaceful protesters. We need to help the Belarusian civil society in every way we can," said Linkevičius.

After the meeting, the Lithuanian and French Foreign Ministers also signed an updated Strategic Partnership Action Plan for further deepening bilateral relations in political, economic, defence, cultural and educational cooperation.

Le Drian came to Vilnius as part of the delegation led by the President of the France Emmanuel Macron.
