On 12 May in New York, a delegation led by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis met with UN officials, non-permanent members of the Security Council, members of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Bureau.
During the meeting in the UN, Chef de Cabinet to the UN Secretary General Iqbal Riza announced UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s intention to visit Lithuania in 2004. At the meeting with UN Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Hans Correl, Minister Valionis presented the instruments of ratification of four conventions: the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, 1998, the Convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and on their destruction, 1997, the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Trans-National Organised Crime, 2000, and Article 1 (as modified in 2001) of the Convention on prohibitions or restrictions on the use of certain conventional weapons which may be deemed to be excessively injurious or to have indiscriminate effects, 1980.
