FOREIGN MINISTER CONGRATULATES ROMANIA AND BULGARIA ON ACCESSION TO THE EU
On 3 January Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas sent letters to Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin and Romanian Foreign Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu to congratulate them on these countries’ accession to the European Union.
“Romanian and Bulgarian accession to the EU completes the fifth wave of EU enlargement that has been a considerable success. The EU enlargement will benefit not only Bulgaria and Romania, but the whole Union that strengthens its positions in international politics,” Minister Vaitiekūnas wrote in the letters.
The Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy expressed hope that Lithuania and two new members of the EU would successfully develop not only bilateral relations but also cooperation in EU policy areas such as Eastern EU neighbourhood, energy policy and others.
Romania and Bulgaria started the EU accession negotiations in 2000 in the same time as Lithuania, but signed the EU Accession Treaty in April 2005.
