FOREIGN MINISTER BIDS FAREWELL TO THE OUTGOING PORTUGUESE AMBASSADOR

On 21 October, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas received outgoing Ambassador of Portugal Antonio Manuel Moreira Tanger Correa, who is the first Portuguese Ambassador residing in Vilnius. Minister P.Vaitiekūnas thanked the Ambassador for his contribution to the development of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Portugal, and expressed specially gratitude for the Ambassador’s solid personal input while organising the state visit of President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus to Portugal on 21 May-2 June 2007.

The head of Lithuanian diplomacy congratulated Portugal with the successful Portuguese Presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2007. The Minister was glad that namely due to Portugal’s initiative and suggestion to approve the SISone4all program, Lithuania along with other eight EU member states smoothly joined the Schengen Information System already in the end of 2007.

During the meeting, the interlocutors exchanged their countries’ positions on important issues of the EU and NATO’s agenda, discussed the perspectives of bilateral cooperation in the areas of politics, economy and culture.

Lithuania and Portugal restored their diplomatic relations on 4 October 1991. The first Portuguese Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania was Alexandre Eduardo Lencastre da Veiga, with his residence in Copenhagen.

The Embassy of Portugal opened in Vilnius in December 2005.
