FOREIGN MINISTER AND PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DISCUSSED EU RELATIONS WITH COUNTRIES OF EASTERN EUROPE AND SOUTHERN CAUCASUS
On 1 April, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis met with the President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell Fontelles, who pays a visit to Lithuania.
During the meeting topical issues of EU agenda such as the ratification of the EU Constitutional Treaty, financial perspective, and EU Eastern neighbourhood policy were discussed. The Minister and the President talked over the necessity to devote common efforts to ensure successful ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe in all EU states.A. Valionis and J. Borrell Fontelles discussed further EU support for democratisation processes in Eastern European countries and paid attention to significant Lithuania’s contribution to this sphere.Reviewing relations with Russia the Minister stressed that Lithuania is interested in maintaining good relations with Russia, and he tends to believe that Russia is also disposed for constructive cooperation. During the meeting it was also underlined that the EU needs a common foreign policy on Russia.
