Focus on the EU’s Eastern Partnership at a meeting with European External Action Service representatives in Vilnius
Representatives of the European External Action Service (EEAS) paid a visit to Vilnius on 19 December 2018.
While discussing a situation in Ukraine, Russian actions against the Ukrainian Navy in the Azov Sea were considered, too. Political Director Asta Skaisgirytė underlined that Lithuania believed such actions were a violation of fundamental principles of the international law, endorsed the last week’s decision by the EU to continue the imposition of economic sanctions on Russia, and called for further strengthening of EU’s response to Russian actions in the Ukrainian conflict.
When energy security was being discussed, Lithuania presented challenges in relation to threats posed by the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Belarus and invited for a discussion about joint EU measures which could give an incentive to Belarus to implement nuclear safety recommendations.
Political consultations also covered a situation in the Western Balkans and the European policy in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
