EXTRAORDINARY MEETING OF EU’S FOREIGN AFFAIRS COUNCIL APPROVES FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH SOUTH KOREA

On 16 September in Brussels, during an extraordinary meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis signed an EU’s agreement with South Korea on free trade.

The agreement provides for much more favorable trade conditions between the EU, including Lithuania, and this Asian country.

The agreement requires eliminating customs duties and provides for the progressive liberalisation of trade, which will allow saving more than 1 million Litas of customs duties for Lithuanian exporters each year and will open possibilities to boost our country’s exports to South Korea.

At a working lunch, the EU foreign ministers attending the Council discussed further provision of aid to Pakistan, which is devastated by big floods. The EU foreign ministers spoke about various forms of economic assistance to Pakistan. Minister A.Ažubalis said that the EU should continue to provide urgent humanitarian aid to this country and aim for a longer term economic stabilization of Pakistan.

Heads of the EU diplomacy discussed the EU’s preparations for the session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is due next week.

On 15-16 September in Brussels, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs A.Ažubalis is attending the European Council with the delegation led by Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė.
