EVENTS PRESENTING THE MILLENNIUM OF LITHUANIA ABROAD GATHER MOMENTUM, AS AN EXHIBITION “LITHUANIA: CULTURE AND HISTORY” OPENS IN TALLINN

On 25 November in Tallinn, an exhibition “Lithuania: Culture and History”, dedicated to the millennium of the name of Lithuania, was opened at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Estonia.

The President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus took part in the opening of the exhibition and gave a welcoming speech. Guests were welcomed by Ambassador to Estonia Juozas Bernatonis. Director of the Lithuanian Art Museum Romualdas Budrys presented the idea of the exhibition, its realization and the goals of the exhibition at length.

This exhibition is a part of an extended project, which presents Lithuania celebrating its millennium through its history and culture in foreign countries.

From 29 October to 14 November the exhibition was open in Helsinki, and in the beginning of December it will be opened for the visitors of the History Museum in the capital of Moldova.

During the whole year 2009 this touring exhibition will visit neighbouring countries: Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. Moreover, the exhibition will tour the Western European countries, the U.S.A. and Canada. In 2010, it is planned to open it for the Japanese and Israeli people.

The exhibition dedicated to the millennium of Lithuania, which is prepared by the Lithuanian Art Museum in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, covers whole history of the development of our state since its first mention till now. This exhibition highlights the main political events. These events are illustrated with the brightest tones of culture of those days.

The exhibition is of a cognitive and educative nature. Its function is not just to present the history and culture of the state of Lithuania, but also to arouse interest in our country, especially when the millennium anniversary and the events of Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 are approaching.

It is expected that the exhibition, while touring the world, shall provide its visitors with a plethora of new and interesting information on the history and culture of our country.

The exhibition at the Embassy will be open until 18 December. Visitors are kindly invited to see it on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 13.00 h – 16.00 h.
