EUROPEAN UNION’S GOAL: TIMELY APPROVAL OF A TRILLION EURO BUDGET
Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, members of the European Parliament Committee on Budgets and Chairman Alain Lamassoure discussed the approval and implementation of the of the EU budget - multiannual financial framework (MFF) 2014-2020 - and related legal acts.
According to the Minister, all effort needs to be put to ensure that the MFF and all the implementable legal acts are approved in time.
"The approval of the MFF will be a significant step towards securing the well-being of the EU citizens. Large sums will be allocated to create new jobs, improve business opportunities, pay agricultural allowances, promote scientific research and innovations, and to benefit other areas. Thus we are committed to the citizens of the EU to approve the budget's programmes in time," Linkevičius said.
The MFF amounts to almost 1 trillion euros (EUR960bn). Lithuania, presiding over the Council of the European Union, sees it necessary that the EP and the Council cooperate successfully. In order for the MMF to come into force the approval of the EP and the Council is required.
The Committee members’ visit schedule also includes meeting with President Dalia Grybauskaitė, members of the Seimas Committee on Budget and Finance, and Committee on European Affairs.
