European Ministers discussed implementation of EU strategic agenda

At the informal meeting of the EU’s General Affairs Council on 28-29 August in Milan, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Rolandas Kriščiūnas along with his EU counterparts discussed the implementation of the EU’s strategic agenda that was agreed by June European Council.

“The implementation of the priorities that were set out by Europe’s leaders for the next five years should not become a merely formal goal. An efficient and competitive Union that fulfils expectations of citizens is a goal, which requires joint efforts of all EU institutions and member states,” said the Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister.

The Ministers discussed ways to improve effectiveness of EU institutions and inter-institutional cooperation aimed at ensuring the implementation of the European Union’s priorities. The Council agreed to set up a working group, which will discuss these issues and present their proposals in December.

The participants of the meeting discussed the role of the General Affairs Council in ensuring the implementation of the European Union’s strategic agenda, as well as the Council’s role in preparing the European Council meetings.

At the June European Council, Europe’s leaders named five priorities for the EU: growth, jobs and competitiveness; empowerment and protection of all citizens; Energy Union with forward looking climate policy; a Union of freedom, security and justice; a Union as a strong global actor.
