EU WELCOMED LITHUANIAN PRESIDENT’S CONTRIBUTION TO RESOLVING THE CRISIS IN UKRAINE

On 13 December, EU ministers of foreign affairs attending the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council meeting thanked the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, the President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski and the EU High Representative Javier Solana for their contribution to settlement of the crisis, which evolved in Ukraine after presidential elections. Lithuanian acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis underlined the importance of acknowledgement of Lithuanian President’s efforts. “Conclusions adopted by the Council on Monday confirm European Union’s confidence in Lithuanian and Polish presidents who, settling Ukrainian crisis, represent the whole European Union. The fact that Ukrainian President directly invited Lithuanian and Polish leaders to mediate the complex talks indicates Ukrainians’ trust in the presidents of these EU states. It is also recognition of Lithuania's ability to solve problems arising in the region," A. Valionis commented on the conclusions of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council. The EU General Affairs and External Relations Council also emphasised strategic importance of the EU relations with Ukraine and adopted European Neighbourhood Policy action plan with this state.
